Piri Reis

The people of Gallipoli (Gelibolu) take great pride in the fact that Muhiddini Piri Reis, the pride of Turkish seafaring, was a native of their town. Muhiddini Piri Reis was one of the greatest maritime scholars of his age, and his contributions to seafaring were immense. Today there are two statues of Piri Reis in Gallipoli, one in the harbour square and one on the waterfront. A museum named after Piri Reis has also been set up inside the historic Gallipoli Castle.
