Gallipoli Castle and Piri Reis Museum

Gallipoli (Gelibolu) Castle, whose remains can still be seen on the seashore today, was built in 711 during the Byzantine period to protect Gallipoli from the Arab raids that lasted from 681 to 717. It was later restored under the Ottomans. Today it is home to the Piri Reis Museum. The museum displays busts, paintings and maps depicting the famous navigator, who is known to have been a native of Gallipoli.
