Tomb of Kaptan-ı Derya Emir Ali Baba

It is in Hamzakoy, Gallipoli (Gelibolu). The tomb is a plain, square, single-storey building. The inscription above its door reads: "Kaptan-ı Derya Ali Baba Türbesi" (Tomb of Grand Admiral Ali Baba). The two crescents and the anchor around the inscription, as well as the crescent and five-pointed star above and below it, are believed to be later additions. The tomb was built in 1356. Emir Ali Bey was the second admiral of the Ottoman State. At his request he was buried facing Hamzabey Bay. His tomb was later built by Demirtaş Paşa. Ships passing Gallipoli used to salute Emir Ali Bey as they went by. Because Emir Ali Baba conquered the island of İmralı, it is said that the name İmralı derives from Emir Ali. Evliya Çelebi, however, refers to him not as a sailor but as Alemdar Ali Baba (Ali Baba the standard-bearer), and does not portray him as a seaman.
